Wetting Agents | How They Improve the Dissolution Rate of APIs
Wetting agents are surface-active substances which reduce the surface tension of water. By improving the wettability of hydrophobic substances, they increase the dissolution rate of APIs.
Liquid and Paste-Like Wetting Agents in Wet Granulation
A lot of these standard surface-active substances are liquid or have a paste-like consistency and can therefore only be processed during wet granulation. A careful application of the surface-active substances is necessary to avoid foaming when spraying the granulation liquid.
Solid Wetting Agents in Dry Granulation
If no wet granulation is used as manufacturing method, the surface-active substances need to be solid so that they can be mixed directly to the dry granulation or direct compaction blend.
Examples of Common Solid Wetting Agents
- Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (SDS)
- Poloxamer
- Sodiumdoccusate
